Water Activities on Isle of Palms

Atlantic Ocean on one side, the Intracoastal Waterway on the other. Whether you want to surf, paddle, fish, or just cruise with the dolphins, IOP puts you in the middle of it all.

An Island Built for the Water

Isle of Palms is a barrier island just east of Charleston, South Carolina, and it's surrounded by water in every direction. The Atlantic Ocean rolls in from the east with surf breaks, swimming beaches, and endless horizon. To the west, the Intracoastal Waterway and its network of tidal creeks offer calm, protected waters perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing.

From 1140 Ocean Blvd #102 at 1140 Ocean Blvd, you're steps from the ocean and a short drive from the IOP Marina, where most guided tours and rentals launch. Whether you're a seasoned angler booking a deep-sea charter or a first-timer renting a paddleboard, there's something on the water for everyone in your group.

Here's your complete guide to getting wet on Isle of Palms.

On the Water — Activity by Activity

Surfing

Breach Inlet & Wild Dunes

Isle of Palms has surprisingly decent surf for the Southeast coast. The best breaks are near Breach Inlet on the south end of the island and along the Wild Dunes stretch to the north. Summer brings the most consistent swells — typically 2-4 foot faces — and tropical systems can push overhead waves that draw surfers from across the Lowcountry.

Morning sessions are the move here. The wind is typically light before 10am, keeping the faces clean. By afternoon, the onshore sea breeze chops things up. Board rentals are available at local surf shops on Ocean Boulevard — expect $30-50/day for a soft-top or shortboard.

Pro tip: Breach Inlet has strong currents. It produces the best waves on the island, but it's not a beginner spot. If you're new to surfing, stick to the beach breaks near Front Beach or rent a foam board and take a lesson — several local instructors offer group sessions.

Paddleboarding & Kayaking

IOP Marina — 2 mi

The calm, protected waters of the Intracoastal Waterway make Isle of Palms one of the best paddleboarding and kayaking destinations on the South Carolina coast. The IOP Marina, just two miles from 1140 Ocean Blvd #102, offers SUP and kayak rentals by the hour or half-day.

For a more immersive experience, head to Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant (about 8 miles away). Shem Creek is the Lowcountry's most popular SUP spot — you'll paddle past shrimp boats, waterfront restaurants, and pods of resident bottlenose dolphins that surface close enough to splash you. Coastal Expeditions runs guided eco-tours that combine paddling with naturalist-led talks about the marsh ecosystem.

Best for beginners: Stick to the creek side rather than open water. Tidal creeks are calm, shallow, and forgiving. Go at high tide for the deepest water and easiest paddling. Low tide exposes oyster beds that can be tough on bare feet (and paddle fins).

Fishing

SC License Required

The waters around Isle of Palms are loaded with fish, and there's a fishing style for every skill level. Inshore charters out of the IOP Marina target redfish, flounder, and speckled trout in the creeks and flats — these are typically half-day trips and great for families with kids or first-time anglers.

For the serious angler, offshore charters launch from Shem Creek and head out to the Gulf Stream for deep-sea action — mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna, and king mackerel. Full-day trips run 8+ hours and typically cost $1,200-2,000 for a private charter (split among up to 6 anglers).

Prefer to stay on land? Surf fishing on the beach is free with a valid South Carolina saltwater fishing license (available online for about $11 for non-residents). You can also fish from the pier at IOP County Park — no boat required, and it's a great way to spend a lazy afternoon with a line in the water.

What's biting: Redfish and flounder year-round in the creeks. Speckled trout peak in fall. Offshore season runs May through October. Whiting and pompano from the surf in summer.

Dolphin & Nature Tours

IOP Marina — 2 mi

The waters around Isle of Palms are home to resident pods of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins — and they're not shy. Guided dolphin-watching cruises depart from the IOP Marina daily, and sightings are nearly guaranteed. These dolphins are year-round residents, not seasonal visitors, so you'll see them regardless of when you visit.

The best times for dolphin activity are early morning and late afternoon, when the pods are actively feeding in the creeks and along the beach. Many tours combine dolphin watching with a pass through the salt marsh ecosystem, where you'll spot herons, egrets, ospreys, pelicans, and sometimes sea turtles during nesting season (May-August).

Sunset cruises are another popular option — several operators offer 90-minute sunset tours that motor through the Intracoastal as the sun drops behind Charleston. Bring a camera and a jacket (it gets cool on the water after sundown).

Boat Rentals & Charters

IOP Marina & Shem Creek

Want to captain your own vessel? Pontoon boat rentals are available at the IOP Marina for half-day and full-day excursions. Pontoons are beginner-friendly — no boating license required in South Carolina — and perfect for cruising the Intracoastal Waterway, anchoring on a sandbar, or exploring the creeks around Goat Island.

Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant (8 miles) has additional options including center-console fishing boats, pontoons, and jet ski rentals. Several outfitters there also offer captained charters if you'd rather let someone else navigate while you enjoy the ride.

Typical rates: Pontoon rentals run $250-400 for a half-day (4 hours), $400-650 for a full day. Jet skis are $80-120/hour. Captained sunset cruises typically cost $300-500 for a private 2-hour outing (up to 6 passengers). Book at least a week ahead during summer — these fill up fast.
